Hard vs. Much.


I recently told our MEA team that they didn’t have to work as hard as me. It was an odd statement. What I meant to say is they don’t have to work as much as me, partly because I feel like I’m living my calling and love what I’m doing.

This got me thinking. When I’m confused about something, I often wonder whether there’s a juxtaposition of two concepts: like “hard” and “much.” I seek wisdom in a 2×2 grid with the understanding that each of these quadrants aren’t binary as there is a continuum associated with working hard and working much.

When I’m totally engaged in a calling, I’m a bit of a marathoner. I know others on our team who are intense sprinters. They are no less committed to our endeavor. They just work differently based upon how they optimize their energy.

I worry a little about the “meanderer,” whether they’re a procrastinator, non-linear in how they do things, less focused on the finish line, or a little comatose. I don’t count them out, though, especially if you offer them a little direction. And, a meanderer can often be the “midwife of epiphanies” as, while the rest of the team is logical, they’re potential lyrical approach to seeing the world can allow them to see things that aren’t as obvious to the rest of us.

On the other hand, the spectator may have a role cheering you on, but you don’t necessarily want them on your work team as they’re not likely fully committed to be in the trenches.
