Money and Freedom.

“We all have an identifiable, though largely unconscious and unexamined, relationship with money that shapes our experience of life and our deepest feelings of ourselves and others. Whether you count your change in dollars, yen, rupees, or drachmas, money is one of the central, linchpin issues in all of our lives...

It is in mine, and it is a central issue for everyone I’ve ever met, no matter how much or how little money they have.”

Lynne Twist, The Soul of Money

What if money isn’t your real problem? What if your actual problem is your relationship with money? As my friend Lynne points out in the above quote, many of us have unconscious money scripts that define our relationship with it. Here are a few of the questions we explore at MEA regarding our mindset with money:

  1. What were the first messages you received about money, and is it time to evolve out of those?
  2. If you were in a long-term relationship with money (and you are), how would you describe it? If you went to couples’ therapy with money as your partner, what would you say about money and what would money say about you?
  3. What is wealth? Does money create freedom or vice versa? How does money relate to your values?
  4. And, if we were to apply an icebreaker to the subject of money, how would you finish this sentence, “If you really knew me and my relationship with money, you would know __________________.”

One of the wisest things we can do in our lives, especially as we head into our “retirement” years, is to examine our relationship with money as an avenue to freedom.
