URL vs. IRL.

In a world awash in websites and screen time, the value of IRL (In Real Life) connection will become more apparent in the next year. At the same time, new habits have formed, and how we do business may have become forever altered.

So, how do we know which former In Real Life experiences are susceptible to be replaced with the convenient, safe, inexpensive URL experience?

The more transactional the experience, the more likely a Zoom call or video webinar may adequately substitute. We’ll start hearing the words, “Why did you fly there when you could have accomplished that on a video call?”

The more transformational the experience, the more it will need to stay IRL. Scarcity can breed value. The scarcity of face-to-face human connection will make certain experiences even more important. Except in extreme circumstances like the present, we won’t have Zoom weddings or a Virtual Reality Burning Man.

Worried that your conference, meeting, or event will become redundant? Up the ante on creating a human ritual of connection that can’t be replaced. At MEA, we’re doubling-down on “collective effervescence” (but we’re also considering our online options). Our emotions are more contagious when our mirror neurons can dance together in person. As outlined in this fascinating article, analog is better for serendipity, human interaction, learning, navigation, and emotional engagement.
