When The Clock Strikes Midlife.

In one of the most famous fairy tales, the fairy godmother casts a spell that offers Cinderella a beautiful gown, carriage and horses so she can go to the Prince’s ball, but she’s told she has to leave by midnight before all of this fantasy returns to rags, a pumpkin, and rats.

For many of us, approaching midlife feels a lot like approaching midnight: we’re reduced to a less attractive, more cranky version of ourselves. And, yet, the dawning of midlife offers all kinds of unexpected benefits that are properly socialized in our culture. As I’ve said many times, when we shift our mindset on aging (and midlife is a ripe time to do this), we gain seven and a half years of additional longevity.

This is part of the reason why I wrote “Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better With Age,” to socialize this pro-aging message. I want to say a huge thank you to Julia Steier for creating this colorful graphic that captures the 12 Reasons Why in a way that gives you a hint about why we tend to get happier after age 50. Feel free to share it with others and, better yet, tell them about the book.
