Will You Live to 100?

As I outlined in this blog post entitled “What % of Your Adult Life is Still Ahead of You?” we vastly underestimate our future while occasionally dwelling on the past. Then, along comes this recent NY Times article, “If You Live To 100, You’ll Need More Than Money.”

Imagine this: if you’re 59 years old and you’re going to live to 100, you’re exactly halfway through your adult life, that is, if you start counting at 18 (which, of course, is when you became an adult). The question is: how would you live your life differently with this new perspective of how much time is ahead of you?

Consider this: According to a C.D.C. study, the number of centenarians has expanded 44 percent since 2000. Eighty percent of centenarians are women. According to the Census Bureau, in about 40 years, the number of people 100 and older will be six times as high as it is now. You may be one of them.

In the NYT article, there’s mention of a Life Expectancy Calendar. The last time I took a brief test like this, it said I’d live to 98. This is a different test, which says I’ll live to 96 (must be those extra margaritas I’ve been enjoying). Of course, being the achievement addict I tend to be, I will now take some proactive steps in altering my lifestyle. I’ll hit that triple-digit goal. With style!
