Working Identity: Unconventional Strategies for Reinventing Your Career

Nov 4 - Nov 9, 2024 in Baja, Mexico
Led by: Herminia Ibarra, Chip Conley, Teddi Dean, Daniel Weinzveg

You know what you don’t want to be doing any longer. But you’re not sure what you want to do instead.

Where do you look for answers to help you understand what your next big career move should be?

And how do you get to where you want to go, when you have no idea where that is or what the journey entails?

The uncertainty can feel paralyzing…

Especially when you’re in midlife and have obligations and expenses that make you think you can’t take risks.

But the fact is, you can change the trajectory of your career at any time and find your way to work you love.

Research shows there are proven strategies that you can implement to successfully make the shift to a new career that brings you happiness and fulfillment.

The way forward may not always be clear… and the journey may be circuitous and full of false starts and detours.

But when you get playful, take persistent action, form new connections, and hold your stories lightly as you try on new identities to see what fits and what doesn’t, you will open the door to opportunities you can’t imagine.

In this Navigating Transitions workshop co-facilitated with Working Identity: Unconventional Strategies for Reinventing Your Career author Herminia Ibarra, you will discover research-backed strategies that will help you “act your way into a new way of thinking and being” – and successfully pursue a new career that inspires and fulfills you.

What you’ll gain

Through a combination of our MEA Navigating Transitions curriculum and Herminia’s research-backed self-inquiry and experiential activities, you will discover how to:

  • Get out of stuck mode and take small steps toward a life of possibility
  • Give yourself permission to get playful and deviate from established norms
  • Learn how to hold your history lightly and recognize that it doesn’t define you
  • Flirt with possible selves to see what fits and feels good
  • Get comfortable with uncertainty and develop a curious, experimental mindset
  • Try new things and make quicker decisions on where you want to go deeper
  • Open yourself to opportunities you may not have considered or known about
  • Explore a new approach to connecting with new networks of people
  • Make sense of the trends you’re seeing and what your intuition is telling you
  • Develop an action plan and timeline for your successful reinvention

By the end of your five days with Herminia and the MEA faculty, you’ll feel energized, confident, and excited to put your career reinvention plan into action.

You’ll have a clear idea what your next steps are and will realize there is no “single linear path” that will take you where you need to go – and that it’s the unforeseen twists and turns on your journey that will lead you to opportunities you can’t yet imagine.

Change comes from ACTION, not analysis

It doesn’t come from “looking within” and getting clear on who you are and what you want, and trusting that the path will magically appear.

Self-Introspection IS important, but it’s not the answer in and of itself. It’s not even the first step on your journey!

To create meaningful change, YOU have to change.

You must be willing to be curious and experiment and try new things – and let go of your old identity and play around with new ones as you evolve to become the kind of person who is capable of attaining the career you want to have.

Are you ready to embark on your next professional adventure?

People come for the workshops,
but they stay for the community

This is truly MEA’s “secret sauce” and something you can only experience in person: the powerful connections you will make, not only with your fellow participants and the incredible MEA faculty, but also the deeper sense of connection you will feel to your own inner self and the natural world around you.

Research into aging shows that your relationships play a HUGE role in your health and wellbeing later in life. At MEA, you will make deep and lasting connections and become part of a larger community that will make your life richer and more meaningful.

Many of our alumni cohorts have stayed in close touch for years after their workshop and we have a growing number of local alumni chapters all over the world. It’s a joy for us to see them continuing to offer each other community, friendship, and support as they create thriving midlives for themselves. So if you have been feeling at all disconnected or isolated on your journey, we would love to have you join us!
