Creating an Organizational Growth Mindset.

When I joined Airbnb in early 2013, the two topics that CEO Brian Chesky was most curious about as he heard me converse about creating organizational culture as a strategic differentiator were: (a) mindset; and (b) moving from the transactional base of the hierarchy of needs pyramid to the transformational peak (which you can read about in my book PEAK). For the sake of this post, I’m just going to focus on mindset.

Back in April, I offered this post about how to apply a growth mindset to a pandemic. If you want to apply that to your organization, I suggest you check out this wonderful podcast from Your Brain at Work. You will learn in this podcast how companies can apply a growth mindset so they can operate with more adaptability and resilience. You’ll hear things like “writing the playbook while we’re living it,” “experiment to grow,” and “how to apply a growth mindset to diversity and inclusion.” Really interesting stuff especially for you senior leaders, HR folks, and leadership coaches.

As I reflect on the past couple of months, joined at the hip with my two MEA co-founders Christine Sperber and Jeff Hamaoui, I dissect our recent pivot from our normal workshop calendar for the next year to Sabbatical Sessions. I have come to realize that this part of my journey called upon me to walk the walk and embrace our own organizational growth mindset.

In the brief video below, I’ve outlined the emotional rollercoaster we were on and why I found such resistance initially to what we call “the swerve.” And, there’s also a special offer in there to join us in Baja before the end of the year. Thank you to Christine and Jeff for buckling my seatbelt and reminding me to throw my hands in the air and scream during the most exhilarating parts of our pandemic rollercoaster ride.
