How Are You Growing Your TQ (Transitional Intelligence)?

Years ago, I struggled with a long-term romantic break-up. I’d been jilted and it came out of left field. I felt unwanted and unlovable and - more than anything else - I felt stuck. A good friend of mine scooped me up and took me to my first Burning Man journey a quarter century ago. And, from that experience in seeing the Man burn (ironically, founder Larry Harvey built the man on San Francisco’s Baker Beach many years earlier when he’d suffered a break-up), I came to realize that the first step of any transition is to ritualize the ending of whatever needs to go.

All these years later, I’ve learned that mastering transitions may be one of our most important modern skills. Our lives are full of voluntary and involuntary transitions, some personal, some collective. Sixty years ago, your life was laid out for you and the world didn’t change all that much. Both of my grandfathers worked for the same employer (different companies) for their full 40+ year careers. Today, the average person has 12-13 employers over the course of their career.

My MEA partner Kari Cardinale has coined the term “Transitional Intelligence” as “the capacity to perceive life’s transitions as internal opportunities for growth, to recognize the stage you are in, and to skillfully move through it with compassion, clarity, and confidence.” Kari co-wrote (with my co-founder Jeff Hamaoui) this amazing free resource, The Anatomy of a Transition, that outlines the roadmap for how you can navigate your transitions in midlife and beyond.

We have a variety of Navigating Transitions workshops coming up in June and July at both of our campuses. There’s never been a better time for you to transcend a transition that feels like it has you stuck in quicksand. Check out these workshops, all of which have financial aid options for you if you need a little assistance.

June 24-29 in Baja
with my co-founder Jeff Hamaoui and psychologist Barbara Tint

July 1-6 in Santa Fe with my other co-founder Christine Sperber and our head of facilitation Sue Izzo

July 8-13 in Baja with one of my favorite MEA facilitators Thérèse O’Neill

July 29-Aug 3 in Santa Fe with Christine Sperber

What are you waiting for? It’s time to invest in your TQ.

Don’t just take my word for it. Oprah just published “50 Things to Do Before You Turn 50” and the only business she mentioned was MEA. Check it out…maybe you’ll see Oprah in Baja or Santa Fe when you come for a workshop.
