The Two Magic Numbers of Aging.

When I turned 50, a childhood friend who is a financial advisor asked me, “What’s your magic number?” I had no idea what he was talking about, so I told him that 4 was my lucky number.

He laughed and explained that after age 50, we need to start clarifying how much money we’ll save for retirement. That’s when I asked him how to create the magic of money growing on trees. That’s the kind of magic I’m looking for.

Americans now think they need at least $1.25 million for retirement, a 20% increase from a year ago, according to a survey by Northwestern Mutual. And, yet, the average amount in an American retirement savings account is just $87,000. Man, it’s gonna take some magical thinking to fill that gap especially given the rotten performance of the stock market this year. About half of Americans think they may have to work until they die due to a lack of retirement savings. We’ll be exploring your lifestyle, work, and financial options in a workshop, “Reframing Retirement: Thriving in Your Next Phase of Life” (March 19-26). It will be magical!

The other magic number of aging is even more illuminating. It’s 3%! According to research published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, less than 3% of American adults achieve four of the most essential healthy living characteristics: healthy diet, moderate exercise, not smoking, and low body fat. These measures, along with stress levels, sleep habits, social engagement, and mental health play a significant role in a healthier life and longevity.

Are you part of that 3%? If not, you might want to join us with well-known wellness celebrity and thought leader Kathy Smith for her “Fit and Fully Alive at Every Age” Baja workshop (June 18-25).

How are you investing in your emotional, financial, and physical health after age 50? Make the right investment, and you may find the returns magical.
