During the holidays, my 82-year-old dad took our ATV and jaunted around the Baja desert for an hour. He came back with a childish grin on his face, proudly declaring, “I haven’t felt that free in years.”
My heroes Debbie and Michael Campbell have been profiled twice by the New York Times. As they approached a traditional middle-class retirement in 2013, they knew they had “one more adventure” in them. They rented their Seattle home, sold their sailboat and cars, and reduced all their stuff until it fit inside a small storage unit. Their goal was to live their daily lives in other people’s homes. They’re now approaching 100 countries, including more than 250 stays in Airbnb homes. And they’ve done it all on a pretty tight budget—spending little more money than they would have if they’d retired in Seattle.
I’m happy to say the Campbells will now be coming to Baja. In fact, on June 7-14, I will be co-leading an MEA workshop with them both, aptly titled, “Wisdom Meets Wanderlust.” If you’ve ever imagined investing in travel as a top priority in midlife and beyond, this workshop was made for you. Or maybe you just want more wanderlust in your life. The workshop will also cover our Making of a Modern Elder core curriculum.
