Employees & Culture: Five Lessons I’ve Learned From Downturns


Based upon the overwhelming response to last Monday’s post, I’m going to create a series of five brief video lessons each Monday for organizational leaders and entrepreneurs. Today’s post will focus on creating a vibrant employee culture in the midst of a difficult environment.

Next week, I’ll focus on how to create and nurture customers who are evangelical.

You’ll learn more by listening to the short video but here’s the summary of my five points:

  1. The most important question you can ask your direct reports to help them live up to their greatest potential during this important time is, “How can I support you to do the best work of your life here at ___________?”
  2. Here’s one equation that can help everyone in your business reduce their anxiety: Anxiety = Uncertainty x Powerlessness. Here’s a past post with more details.
  3. Corporate culture needs to be democratized in a downturn through creating decentralized cultural ambassadors. (Can be found in my book “PEAK”)
  4. How do you assure your company doesn’t become a bunch of “Zoombies?” Become a first-class noticer of what nuance is going on with your team on the screen and create sidebar conversations after team video calls with those who seem less engaged or at odds.
